Resolutions are a lot like cotton candy. They’re sweet ideas but will disappear under any kind of pressure (or in any kind of puddle). A SMART goal is the key to turning these ephemeral wishes into lasting change. Specificity, Measurability, Achievability, Relevance, and a Timeline give your goals the structure and shape you need in order to achieve them.

A New Year provides a new opportunity for reflection, intention, and perspective. As we launch into 2023 full of optimism (albeit cautious optimism, at times), we wanted to write a collaborative post where we can each share our lessons-learned and hopes for the new year.

A new year gives us a chance to ask ourselves: what’s most important? Do we want to be “right” or do we want to grow?
Goodbye, Resolutions; Hello, Houseplants!
We have all experienced unimaginable challenges these past two years and no one yet knows how the stress from these past couple of years will affect our lives, but we do know that it will show its effects. In times of uncertainty, we must remember that the human spirit is strong. We are resilient. In the middle of constant stress, like the snake plant, we can find a way to flower.
Obstacles and Potential
We convince ourselves that higher education must be broken and that the traditional model no longer works. Well, that is not entirely true. It does work, for some, but not for all, and that is the bigger issue. We tend to think of higher education as a privilege instead of a common good. We spend time experimenting with silver bullets hoping that one solution will rise above the rest and solve the higher education crisis.

Without a plan of action that includes an understanding of the how and why, a goal is, well, just a resolution.
